Can I be free in my own country
Can I take that deep breath of fresh air
And feel free to even say a prayer
Can I throw my arms around those I love
Be happy as a carefree morning dove
Can I simply be myself each day
And share my love to those who’ve gone astray
Can I smile with those who have suffered so
Lift their spirits somehow as I go
Can I be free in my American land
Continue to give a helping hand
Can I keep the sweet music resounding in my ear
Hopefully dispelling another baleful fear
Can I be free, really free to make my Land a safer place
And give myself to the betterment of every human race
Can I shed another tear as old glory is raised in patriotic songs
Dear God, thank you for our countless blessings in spite of all our wrongs
Freedom, a breath of air I, and you, enjoy every day
A rich Republic we are so privileged to work and live and play
